In
\n2017, FIRS announced the introduction of six (6) new electronic tax services
\n(e-services) after several years of preparation. These include e-Registration;
\ne-Stamp duty; e-Taxpay; e-Receipt; e-Filing and e-TCC. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Why the introduction of the electronic
\ntax services? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The
\ngovernment in a bid to make the tax process convenient and in line with the
\nNational Tax Policy, introduced the electronic services to ensure adequate
\ntrack of taxpayers’ records are kept, ease revenue collection, increase compliance
\nlevels, reduce administrative burden and improve accountability amongst others.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Of
\nall the e-services, the e-Filing system seems to be one of the most talked
\nabout initiatives of FIRS and has received the most consultation from
\nstakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

What is e-Filing service?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

E-Filing
\nis the process by which taxpayers render select tax returns online through
\nFIRS’ Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS). The taxes covered under the e-Filing
\nplatform include:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Company
\nIncome Tax (CIT)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Capital
\nGains Tax (CGT)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tertiary
\nEducation Tax (TET)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pay-as-you-earn
\n(PAYE) and <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u00b7       <\/span><\/span><\/span>Value
\nAdded Tax (VAT).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

On
\nthe e-Filing platform, taxpayers are able to view their current balances with
\nthe tax authority i.e. how much has been remitted and how much is outstanding. This
\nis expected to provide taxpayers with real-time access to tax records submitted
\nwith the authorities without the need to physically visit the tax office. It is
\nalso expected that the e-Filing system will be a reflection of the guiding
\nprinciples under the National Tax Policy  
\n<\/span>of convenience, cost-effectiveness and flexibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

To ensure
\nseamless use of FIRS e-Filing service, taxpayers need to keep abreast of e-Filing
\nregistration requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

What is the e-Filing process?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The e-Filing
\nregistration process can be completed in just three (3) step as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

1.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Obtain an “e-Filing access application form”
\nfrom any FIRS tax office or download the form from the FIRS website here e-Filing
\nApplication Form<\/u><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

2.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Complete the form by following the
\ninstructions contained therein. The contact information provided may be that of
\nthe taxpayer or a representative such as a tax consultant. Please note that
\ncontact details to be included should be carefully thought out as vital
\ninformation about the taxpayer will be readily accessible by the contact<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

3.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Physically submit the duly completed form to
\nFIRS after which a system generated username and temporary password will be
\nissued. The password should be changed after first time login to the platform.
\nThis step could be completed within 24 to 72 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

As
\nearlier noted, the e-Filing process is still in its infancy. Hence, taxpayers
\nmay experience hitches and possible delays while using the electronic service
\nwhich are typical at the teething stage. It is therefore advisable to liaise
\nwith relevant tax offices on the appropriate mode of filing ahead of any
\ndeadline.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

With
\nthe above steps and tips, dealing with the FIRS has just gotten easier and
\nbetter. Therefore, fulfilling your tax obligations should no longer be a
